Does a broody sit until the eggs hatch, or does she sit until 21 days are up?
My Australorp has been trying to hatch a couple of smooth stones for a week or more, and since I took the stones away she's beginning to get a bit bored. Plus, I chase her off the nest a couple of times a day. Seriously, I didn't expect her to sit this long because her "sister" only lasted 4 days before she got bored.
But for the next time - who has had success with duck eggs under a broody? Is it a good idea to have the incubator ready?

i think if you have an unproven broody, i.e. one who has not sat on eggs until they hatch, it is best to have an incubator at the ready. The length of time a broody sets is totally up to her own personality. Sometimes they will sit for months, sometimes just a few days. i think once they sit on eggs until they hatch, they will do that again in the future. That's been my experience.

Okay, thanks.
She hasn't proven herself yet, won't be 1 yr old until next Wednesday, July 1. For her birthday, there will be Fireworks, parades, flag flying, barbeques and general partying. A national holiday!
Just because my 2 Li'l Australorps and Buff Orp are a year old!

In the past I have had broody hens sitting for several months

, even if I keep moving them. This time I put some fertile eggs under a hen that had gone broody and they are starting to hatch...so hopefully she will get back to normal soon.
