Question about Bunnies & Bedding

My bun bun kept pushing all of his bedding into piles, and then laying on the bare floor of his cage. So I just took it all out, he seems much happier.

I have used one particular type of kitty litter with wonderful results. It's called Yesterday's News and is made from recycled newspaper. They have two different scents and a type that is unscented. Neither of the scents ever bothered any of my bunnies on them. I did have litterbox trained bunnies though, and I only used the litter in their litterbox. I gave them small pieces of cheap sheets and once in a while a t-shirt rag to play with and lay on for the actual floor of the cage.

This picture is my black japanese harlequin rex, Yoshie. You can sort of see the bottom of the cage in the picture (she has knocked some of the kitty litter out of the box), and yes, she did have a stuffed bunny that she LOVED!

If you're willing to clean it every other day (or use a litterbox), shredded newspaper is a big hit (they can dig, re-arrange, and "burrow" in it), and shredded office paper works, it just sticks together if it gets wet.

My cat is actually scared of my rabbit...she tried to be the big 'I am' with him when we first got her...he turned round and thumped her in the belly with his feet. Never had a problem since!! They chase each other round the garden for fun. Try them together, you might be lucky.

Sunshine is my first bunny. I tried shavings but it was too messy as she kicked them everywhere. So i saw where someone on a bunny site used newspaper and that has been much easier. Sunshine likes to mess them up and hide under them. She shreds them all over and plays with them. But it stays in the cage and is easy to clean. I used wood pellet heat and put them in a litter box and she immediately stopped going in the cage and uses the box. That made things way better too. With shavings, i think she thought the entire cage was a litter box.

How about not using bedding for the bunny. Use 1/2 inch hardware cloth on the floor of the cage with no tray so the urine and poop passes through the mesh and falls on the lawn. Move the cage around frequently so it doesnt pile up in one spot and almost never have to clean up at all. Everything will be spread out and compost naturally.

If you do it any other way you may decide you don't want bunnies because the odor of their urine will knock you out and they poop constantly. You will be cleaning all day and all night long.

I had a pair of bunnies inside and used both pine shavings and shredded newspaper. Either way they sprayed urine across the room on my walls, in my curtains on the floor. The whole room stunk and I was cleaning twice a day. When I moved them outside to a pen with a sand floor, things were much better. That is another option.
