Question about chicks in coop

My chicks are about three weeks old now and I have been taking the out to the coop during the day when I am home to supervise. Yesterday I left them in there until the sun started going down and they were all at the coop door crying. I easily picked them all up and put them in their brooder.

My question is, why were the crying? Are they just not ready to stay out there? I am going to wait a bit until they stay outside all day and night, but pretty soon they will outgrow their plastic tub brooder. Do I need to enclose the coop at night, like maybe cover it with a blanket?

chick that young still need a heat source they where crying because they where cold i make sure my outdoor chicks have a heat source at night untill they are least 5 weeks old. And leaveing them outside in a coop that isn't inclosed with at least some type of wire is a bad idea chicks are an easy target for predators. But other then that i have 1 week and 2 week old chicks in outside brooders 24/7 with little problems (with a 24/7 heat source as well).

also they should have feed and clean water 24/7 but i'm sure you already know this

Yes, they have food and clean water. It was a high of 103 yesterday here in AZ, so not sure if they are cold. They did not start crying until the sun started to go down.

never mind the cold part have they experienced the dark before? if not that could be the issue.

They have not, at least not outside. That is what I was thinking.

Yeah i had this problem with some meat chicks i was raiseing a while back if you put a small light in their coop not one for heat but for light like a small child night light they should be able to stay outside at night with no problems but keep an eye out for predators.
