Hello this is my first year with chickens. I have a mixed flock of production reds and barred rocks and buff orps. They are all around 3 months old. Recently I lost a red rooster and yellow hen on back to back days, just found them dead in the coop in the morning. I also noticed that alot of the other birds were acting sluggish and were reluctant to leave the coop to forage during the day. I also noticed some bloody poop in various places. Doing some research I suspected this to be coccidiosis. I have goats and I treat the kids for cocci with Di-Methox 12.5% solution orally at 3 and 6 weeks for 5 day increments. With this prevention I havent had cocci in my goats. The same product lists directions for chickens. I just finished treating the drinking water for the chickens for 6 days as it says on the bottle. I havent lost anymore chickens and see no more blood and the chickens seem to be acting more vigorous again so I believe it was successful.

So heres my question... (sorry for the long preamble:) ... should I treat like this regularly? Are chickens only really susceptible up to a certain age as goats are? With goats they say it is present in adults but they are strong enough that it doesnt really affect them so you only need to treat the kids. Does anyone have a preventative program for their chickens and if so how often do you treat the water and do you do so for adults as well as juvenile birds?

Thanks for your help!

no, they should be developing imunity to it now -wait and see. As for the roosters you an thin them out whenever you want. My little roos fight all the time, they are sorting it out. They have a long way to go before they are a real problem, and they will know who's top dog early.
