I was talking with my dad today about a design for my coop.

I want to use a dog kennel run I have- 5 ten foot wide panels, one with a walk thru door. My plan is to set up the run two panels long and use the 5th panel on one end (20 x 10). I'd like to build a coop as the other end of the run. It will be plywood on 3 sides and mostly hardware cloth on the 4th side (the one "inside" the run).

Ideally I'd like to do a gabled roof with metal roofing panels and carry that over the entire run. However, my head builder (dad) says that a solid roof that big (approx 24 x 10) will easily be caught by the wind and torn from the run & of course hit the house (or worse). He is suggesting PVC hoops with wire covering. I would like something a little more substantial.

Any thoughts/suggestions from the builders out there?

Thanks!

In May I had a freak 60 to 70 mile an hour straight line wind take the roof off of my shed. The section that came off was 12' x 36', but they broke into 12' x 12''pieces because of the way they were framed. One of the sections came over 200 feet, went over my house without touching, and landed in my front yard. The previous owner used 2-1/2" smooth nails to nail the purlins to the rafters. There was a 10" gap between the roof and the walls so it was not that different from what you are proposing.

The moral to the story is that the winds associated with the afternoon thunderstorms you can get can present a real danger, let alone the hurricanes. Pay attention to your dad. You can probably do what you are talking about but you have to make sure the roof is firmly attached to the panels and the panels are anchored down very well.
