Question about DE ?!?

Okay..."Codex" means it is approved by some consortium or other having to do with the United Nations I believe. It means NOTHING if your bag does not have the "Codex" word on it. What you need to be careful of is that there are manufacturers that make different kinds for different purposes. PermaGuard arguably, makes the best in my opinion and I sell it in smaller amounts. However, PermaGuard also makes a DE for external use on animals because it contains perethrins (sp) which is an external insectiside. Again, if your bag says to use 2% in feed, it is safe for you to use. Again, it does not have to have the word "codex" on it to be food grade. Hope this helps!

Well don't feel alone about having someone uninformed serving you.

I went into the co-op the other day and asked "Do you have Codex Food grade DE?"

The following resulted...

What is DE?

What is Codex?

We have it...in the gardening department, agricultural grade.

Again I asked DO YOU HAVE FOOD GRADE?

I get "They are the same thing"

NO they are not...So I take it you do not have food grade...

Yes, in the gardening department.

Me: What part of FOOD grade do you not get? Edible versus NON-EDIBLE AGRICULTURAL

I gave up and left.

When trying to buy it, ask what the crystalline silica content is - then make sure it is food grade - look on the bag and see if it can be added to feed - if you see the word "perethrins" it isnt food grade. Remember...the non-food grade DE can be deadly to you and your animals!
