Am going to be using the deep litter method in my outside chicken run and was wondering if by using the DE, would I be killing the bacteria that is supposed to break down all the waste, or is that on too small a scale (bacteria) to affect it? I will be using sand inside of my coop, but want to try the deep litter method outside of coop.

Would appreciate any info on this subject. Thanks

DE will not harm bacteria and composting of chicken waste. Shovel out your deep liter occasionally into a compost bin where you technically will mix with yard cuttings (also ideally wood chips) and turn the pile for good decomposition. This will make great compost for your flower beds or veg garden.

Thanks for the insight, Bought a 50 lb bag of food grade DE and will use it occasionally in run.

"Am going to be using the deep litter method in my outside chicken run "

The DEEP LITTER method is for INSIDE the coop.
It's dependent on the litter staying DRY
