Question about Dry Incubation?

Its tough to know if this is normal or not ! But some may and some may not survived. During my first time lock down, the humidity went up to 75% and I think it "drowned" them. Other issue could be abnormal developments. How many chickies you go today ?

Well, I am worried again. One chick hatched this morning and nothing more. I count 3 eggs piping, but they have been the same all day with no more progress. Is this normal?

All three of the piping eggs hatched over night. I wonder if they like to hatch in the dark? It would be dark under the hen when they hatch naturally. Anyway, today is day 22 and I see at least one more egg that is piping. The hatched chicks are knocking the other eggs around. I wonder if that is okay? If the one that is piping hatches, then that will make 5 out of 46 eggs. Not a very good ratio for the massive amount of effort and resources I have invested into this.

all mine did hatch over night ! we were up all night watching them hatch ! Yes its ok for the chickies to bumped other eggs around, very natural thing to do. sometime its like its trying to help the others out ! I hatched 5 out of 12 silkies. My friend broke the eggs that did not hatch, some had very little development and died. some didnt developed. the ones I hatched during the lock down were fully developed, but died during lock down. I am guessing humidity too high.

Day 23. Well, out of 46 eggs I had 6 eggs hatch. Here is the funny thing. All these 46 eggs were from five different sellers. All the eggs that hatched were from a single seller. Two sellers eggs did not even develop (16 eggs total), only one from another seller developed (10 eggs), and about 7 each developed from the last two sellers. But only the eggs from one seller actually hatched out. Does anyone have any idea why this would be this way?

The chicks are cute and very strong.

They have my custom built huge brooder all to themselves.

I dont know why the others didnt hatch ! I refused to order eggs, because I think its a waste of money !. I rather get them from a local. Maybe someone else can tell you from their experience. By the way congrats on your 6 chickies !

"I think it is a waste of money". I can only agree with that statement. The evidence is just too strong to say anything else.

Wether you order eggs or not is a personal decision and many times is based on the local availability of the type of breed you are interested in. It isn't necessarily a waste of money to order eggs if what you are looking for is a rare breed and there is no one local or the breed you are looking at getting is just too expensive to buy chicks or adults.

I regulary ship Araucana eggs ( yes the real ones ). When someone wants to buy them from me, I first find out where they are located to see if I know of a breeder that is closer to them than I am. If I can find someone one closer to them I will refert them to that person. The shorter the distance the happier the egg. Araucana are incredibly difficult to hatch in perfect circumstances, let alone being shipped halfway accross the world. There are several reason why an egg will not develop.

(1) The egg is old. Some sellers will ship old eggs just to fill an order, along with fresh eggs. I personally feel that if you are shipping an egg it shouldn't be more than 4 days old when it leaves the premises. I collect eggs for 3 days and then send them on the morning of the 4th day. I write the date they were collected on each egg as I am collecting them. Lets say I have an order of 1 dozen to go out Tuesday. I will start collecting eggs on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday for that order. Monday night I package the eggs and print the shipping label and Tuesday morning I drive to the post office to catch the first truck out. I always send a few extra. Now lets say there are some left over that I didn't ship out because the girls are being generous, but not enough to fill another order. Thats where the dates I write on there come in handy. I will continue to collect eggs and write the date on their untill I have another order come in. When that order comes in I will only fill it with eggs from 3 days prior to the date I will be shipping it out and I can tell by the dates I have written on the eggs. All eggs that don't ship out by Friday go in my incubator every Friday for myself.

(2) Not packaged properly. If an egg is shaken too much during travel it can cause an embryo not to develop. I always package the eggs in bubble wrap and set them in a box with cotton batting on the bottom, sides and tops. The eggs are packaged pointy end down in the box with their tops oriented to the top of the box where the shipping label is. There is less air sac movement from side to side and the post office usually keeps the shipping label of boxs right side up for easy scanning.

(3) Eggs are not fertile. Always a possibility. I hatch eggs every week from all my pens to keep track of fertility and quality. I get ones that are not fertile every now and then. One of the reasons I ship extra.

(4) Shipping shakes the air cell even when packaged properly and can cause damages which keeps it from developing.

I also regulary buy hatching eggs from other breeders to keep track of how hatch rates are on their shipped eggs. I usually end up with no chicks hatching or if I am really lucky 1 chick hatching, so when I get an email from someone who bought eggs from me and they have happily hatched several chicks I am happy. I ask that everyone buying eggs from me send me an email when they candle the first time to let me know development. Usually development is 50 %.

I am at day 21 of the dry method. I have tried to keep humidity at 65% but am using new hygrometer so dont know how much I trust it. Humidity has dropped to 57% so I put about 1 tsp of water down the hole of my still air incubator. The humidity jumped to 71% while I was out doing chores so I pulled up the corner of the clear window for a couple of secs. and then put it back quickly. I'll keep ya posted how I do. I think I got 15 eggs...12 in a cardboard egg carton and 3 laying on their sides. I can hear peeping and one looked like it was pipping last night but hasn't gone any farther today.

Hope all goes well for you. I had the same problem with humidity fluctuations during the last 3 days. I wanted 65%, but it seemed like I could either hit 60% or 70%. I have devised a new humidity system for my next batch (my own eggs this time). I put a large square of evaporative cooling system pad in the bottom of the incubator. Then I ran some 1/4 inch water line up to a gallon jug filled with water from my R.O. system. I installed a 1/4 inch control valve in the middle of the line and put the other end down through the vent hole on the top of my hova-bator 1588. So now I have a a gravity fed humidity control system. I can control the water flow with the valve and it drips down onto the evaporator padding at the bottom. This should allow me to precisely control the humidity level in the incubator with out ever opening the lid. I just set some 6 eggs from my barred cochin bantams and 6 from my wheaten game hens. We will see just how I do with my own eggs this time.

from what I have read from Backyard chickens, there were lots of disappointments , from shipped eggs. Some very lucky. You just have to find the right sellers.
