I've never had ducks before and I was wondering what it means when my drake lifts his wings/head, quacks, and darts his head forward whenever he sees me sometimes? Is it courtship behavior? Can't really find anything on the subject and I'm just curious.

(He's a Rouen if that matters.)

That's his version of protecting the lady ducks. It's more of a warning. My drake used to do that every spring during the time that ducks will usually hatch babies. Although he tried to be stealthy so he wouldn't make any noise and just stretch his neck out and run after whomever he thought was a threat. It was kind of cute

Do you have duck hens with him ? If not it may be courting behavior especially if he does not lower his head and run at you.

Yes he has two hens which I think is funny because he'll sometimes ignore them and follow me instead. The hens are still fairly young but fully feathered. He is about a couple of months older or so since I got them later on after his intended mate died while they were still babies.

I haven't seen him show any interest in the hens yet which could be due to the fact they are still pretty young.

EDIT: forgot to mention he doesn't run at me just side to side kind of and will follow me in a non-aggressive way
