Question about EE's

Thank you for the excellent post - and I agree with earthy_chicks, I appreciate your tone. There are true breeds, pure breeds, that I am certain are great representations of the Ameraucana and Aracauna breeds. It is a bit of shock when you find out the general disdain for EE vs. true Ameraucana, etc....I've stepped in this one a few times - and I am now proudly the momma of EE's apparently....when I thought I was sold Ameraucana's...we cant tell the difference, when we're just learning. And the learning process can be harsh! I'm almost afraid to post anything about Marans in some places....ooops, thats another story! I've learned that chickens can be serious business! :|

Good question, I was wondering the same thing. Also would the green eggs trait stay or go? I have an EE pair, If I hatch their eggs, would the chicks grow up to lay green eggs or would the other mutt breeds in them cause them to lay white or brown eggs?

I've stepped on the EE/Ameraucana landmine as well. I bought 2 "Ameraucanas" from the feed store as a fun thing for the kids. No where did it say EE, so how was I to know.

The feed store chicks didn't make it, so I replaced them with 3 "Ameraucanas" from a breeder. After reading up on "Ameraucanas" I posted here and then called the breeder.

Her "Ameraucanas" came from a hatchery, so they're EEs. Add to that my "Ameraucanas" have feathered legs. She breeds Brahmas. So near as I can tell, I have EE/BB Xs. I just call them EEs.

Same mom and dad. 2 are identical.

From what I've gleaned here, I may get olive eggs. Since I think at least 2 of the 3 are roos, I probably won't get any. That full EEs may only lay brown eggs.

So if you cross them, you may get anything from greenish to brown. That's what I'm thinking.

My roo brothers are twins(or so it seems) and I have 2 girls that look the same and the others are all different and only 3 have the wonderful green legs out of (originally 17) now only 9 left. They are beautiful and sweet birds I hope you enjoy yours as much as we do ours.

I am pretty new to all of this, and I'm still reading and reading and trying to remember the stuff that I read, but.....I doubt if you are going to get any white egg layers; you might end up with some brown egg layers. I know that my first small flock of EE's (sold to me as Ameraucanas, of course) had at least one brown egg layer in the bunch.

There's also another bit that I know I have read but that I have forgotten the details of, but it said something about the egg still being blue but being overlayed somehow with the brown pigment....? Sorry, as I said, I'm pretty new to this.

Seems to me that if your EE is the product of two Ameraucanas of different types, your eggs are still going to be blue-green. (The eggs I bought on eBay that were from Silver and White cocks and Brown/Red hens were almost identical in color to the eggs I bought that were from Blue/Black Ameraucanas and also from Silvers). Once you get another breed in the mix somewhere, the blue egg gene (which I think is dominant) will stay in the mix, but may be diluted or overlaid by the pigment from another gene. And that leads me to suspect that egg color might be the result of incomplete dominance.....?

Okay, totally out of my depth here, so I'm going to stop.

Susan

PS. I just found this article on egg color. Maybe it will interest someone besides me

That is a great resource!
I've been wondering about a couple of my mixes, what their eggs may be like? I have definite Cuckoo Marans crossed with White Leghorns...we call them Cuckoo Horns....and they are all white. I wonder if they will just lay lighter brown eggs, or white eggs? I also have some Cuckoo Marans crossed with other, not sure what, but they are gray birds, really pretty.
I appreciate all of the links to info...it gives me somewhere to look for neat stuff! Yay eggs!
