So I just went out to check on the pullets and broody because it floods on my land and my girl is in a wire dog kennel on top of pallets in the coop and I'm in Texas and we had bad storms last night. So I found an egg by the door of the kennel she was still setting on the other eggs so I grabbed it and it was not cold still a little warm I had my flashlight with me so I candles it thinking maybe it's not good but I could see veins and black blob and it kind of looked like it was moving I'm on day 11 so I put it back under her to see if maybe she just so how pushed it out when adjusting herself. What do u think should I have done that or just taken it out?

Also it looks like she got some water in the nest maybe the roof was leaking or the rain just coming in with the wind. How do I change the bedding without her getting mad and maybe not continue to set on the eggs.

Ps she went crazy and broke an egg yesterday when I gave the other girls treats so I did throw some in there for her.

I would have just put it back under her. You will get all kinds of deep thought about why the egg was out there, maybe the hen rejected it, but to me the most logical reason is that she accidentally knocked it out rearranging the bedding and moving the eggs around. This brings up the question, do you have enough lip around that nest to stop her from accidentally knocking eggs out?

If it happens again, I suggest you mark that egg somehow, maybe with a black Sharpie, so if you see that specific egg kicked out again you might think something is wrong with it and she really is rejecting it. But it would have to happen a few times for me to believe she is really rejecting it.

Hens often hide nests out in bushes or other pretty open places and still hatch chicks, even when it rains. That nest getting damp isn’t a big problem to me as long as she is keeping the eggs warm. But if you want to change out the bedding (which is not a bad idea especially if it is wet) take the hen off the nest, take the eggs out, take the wet bedding out, put in new dry bedding, and put the eggs back. It should make no difference to the hen. I’ve done that before under different circumstances.

Ok thanks for the advice glad I did the right thing.. As far as taking her out I'm afraid if I take her out then she won't come back to the nest and I would have to try and catch her. I don't have another place to lock her up while I change out the nest but she is under all the eggs and it doesn't look that bad but I just feel bad sitting in damp shavings and hay. She doesn't seem to mind it.

Is there anything I can do about Mosquitos they are everywhere and I don't want to hurt her is I spray or put something in the coop.
