I've had fried green tomatoes before..and i loved them. We just used un-ripe regular "red" tomatoes.. LIke beefsteak or whatever..
BUT.. someone told me we used the wrong kind of tomato..they said that there is an actual "green" tomato that folks use for this... not un-ripe red tomatoes..
What kind of tomatoes am i really supposed to use? WHat do you all do?

Ok I've seen Purple Potatoes but, Green Tomatoes??? I agree they are just unripe red tomatoes. IMHO the bigger the better for Fried Green Tomatoes. I tried breading and freezing to fry later but, first attempt failed - they stuck together. I then breaded and froze them on a cookie sheet with wax paper then after put in zip locks

great in the winter!!! Why they don't sell them in the freezer section with other breaded veggies???

OOH, now that is a good idea!! I'm gonna plant LOTS of them this year and freeze them up for frying in the winter!

My brother in law slices them and bbq's them. Yummy. I know out here you buy them at the Mexican markets.

Yup, unripe tomatoes.
Maybe they were thinking of tomatillos.

Imp- unripe tomatoes are my favorite, bright sparkling crisp taste. You can keep those soggy red things.
