Question about Hay

The farm I just purchase has a very large barn.
I just built some breeding pens that I plan to set up in the barn.
There are two old square bales of hay left inside the barn.
I don't know how long the hay has been there.
Is it safe to use as bedding?
How do I know if hay is "bad" to use as bedding?

If I doesn't smell good or has mold I would dispose of it . If not I would go ahead and use it
