I am wondering what else I can feed my dogs they appear to be losing a bit of weight. Now I know weight loss is normal for lactating dog mothers but I am concerned they may not be producing the really good milk and I don't want them losing more weight than they are.

So what can I feed them besides just everything! lol

Pregnant dogs and nursing dogs should be on puppy food. Check the ingredients and make sure that the first ingredient is not corn. It needs to be chicken or rice, preferrably chicken. I know that Diamond is a good puppy food. But I'm sure there are other brands also. Don't give her a whole lot extra. Anything with protein, not fat is good.

I fed my female puppy food and that was it. She does not get much people food. But she had plenty of milk. The vet said to feed her puppy food through her pregnancy, so that is what I did.
Hope that helps. and good luck with the pups and mom.
(wow, must have been posting about the same time, I use Diamond too. Love that food)

Cottage cheese, yogurt, and scrambled eggs are excellent for a lactating dog. They are high in protien and nutrients needed to supply the milk.

eta: I also agree with the above that she needs to be on a good healthy puppy food. Flint River Ranch and Wellness are the best brands but not found at your average grocery store, basically anything you buy at a grocery store is not good enough. If you have to use that type of food temporarily but the other foods are exeptionally for your dog. All dogs for that matter.

If you need links to where you can find these products let me know.

Let me add that we have been breeding dogs for over 15 years and have had excellent results. Let me know if you need anymore info. : )

I breed and raise dogs. I have for 10 years now and swear by diamond. From pregnancy confermation my proud mama's start eating lamb and rice puppy food as well as a half cup of yogurt and a cup of cottage cheese per day. I do disagree with texaschickmama. Fat is a good thing to help with the production of milk and to keep mama healthy.

Mind these amounts are feeding a 100 dog. And most importantly GET US PICTURES!!!!!!!!!!!

Great advice! Goat's milk, rice and boiled meats are also good additives. Pour the food to them. You might also try to add more food by giving them canned puppy food.
