So I have a kakhi cambell duck she is 3 years old ,she used to lay mostly daily ,since her leg injury she had got on September 9th which was healed up by end of october her laying has slowed a lot which I'm ok with because my 2 ducks are my pets and I could care less about eggs !! But the question I wanted to ask is it normal for a duck especially during to sometimes exhibit her normal egg laying behaviors but not lay a egg after and then just go back to normal ,she's eats fine ,drinks fine ,baths ,preen herself ,she has the zoomies 2 times today and even hopped on her sister and "mated her " if that's what u call it when girls get on each other and do their thing lol and this morning was one of the mornings she did her egg laying behaviors but no egg ,last egg she laid was last Sunday January 4th .when she does lay they are hard shelled ,one day like 3 weeks ago she laid a thin shelled egg which is the only time she ever did that but her other eggs after were normal ,she's on kalambach duck n goose and has oyster shells available 24,/7 next to her duck food so her n her sister can eat what they need when they need it ,right now she's not eating it to much but she does eat some ,now her sister is a egg laying machine she lays every day ,I keep a book of their egg laying just to keep track and in Dec she only ,skipped 3 days and then 1 day so far in January and she eats them shells a lot .they are both mostly indoor ducks but get daily outside time in my yard and their playpen were they sleep I have right next to a big window with no curtains and blinds so the sun comes right on them when it comes up in the Morning until I take them outta their playpen for the day so they get about ,4 hours from just being in their night time playpen before I take them out ..I do have vitametz and recover 911 available n I actually just gave her some about 5 days ago ,I put it in her water for about 7 hours just in case but I only really use the vitametz during hot summer heat waves or if they seem off ..so is it just a hormone thing since her laying isnt consistent ,also she does sometimes sit on her sister egg for a little bit some mornings .. she has no symptoms, not egg bound ,I've done tons of reading this past week on reproductive issue including internal laying and she has no symptoms of any of them and I do feel her belly when she does that and I feel no egg ... No yolk colored dropping , not lethargic,no tail pumping or straining nothing at all besides doing that sometimes and poop is regular ,no labored breathing no ruffled feathers so I'm assuming it's normal ??? @Miss Lydia

What part of the world are you in? Here in the US many ducks stop laying during winter especially once they get a certain age. My 2 yr old Runners laid up into Dec but nothing now and they were always every day layers.
You KC sounds very healthy and your feeding her good quality feed and giving her outside time so most likely she is just done for winter and will start back up in Feb or March or she is just taking time off to rebuild her calcium needs. It takes a lot of calcium to keep laying good hard shelled eggs so they have to take breaks to rebuild the calcium in their bodies.

Im in Philadelphia Pennsylvania so east coast united states , yes I know alot of ducks take breaks in the winter thats not what im wondering about , im wondering that even though shes not laying is ot normal for her to be acting like shes gonna lay , like go thru her laying routine of egg quacking , her pacing back n forth ..thats her egg laying behaviors when she is actually laying a egg but with her not laying for 8 days now is that jusy like a hormonal thing shes doing ? Yesterday and today shes been eating her oyster shells throughout the day n night randomly times but yesterday morning she did her egg laying behaviors but no egg and she did that again this morning but no egg n just goes about her daily routine after shes done doing that ..when I took them out of their night time playpen this morning she was actually sitting on her sisters egg n then when I took her out she started doing her egg laying quacking n she gets hyper when she is getting ready to lay so she was doing that so I put her back in her playpen thinking she might need to lay and she wanted to go back in and she stayed for like a hour before wanting to get out n just took a little bath and ate n is now napping in her kitty bed but no egg ..so is that normal for female ducks to do that n not lay ?? Like I said she seems totally fine n I dont feel egg in her belly when I check her

I don't think she is egg bound since she hasn't laid in 8 days they don't usually live long when egg bound unless they can get it out. Since she is acting normal in all other ways I'd say she def isn't egg bound. But since you have females and even though they eat oyster shell I'd would have Calcium gluconate on hand if you ever feel one could be egg bound. You can't always feel an egg it depends on where it might be in the body. Possibly since her sister laid this is could be the reason for her behavior sounds like hormonal. Has she ever been broody?

I have calcium gluconate on hand incase and tums and ky jelly incase that ever does happen , she just laid a egg yesterday and it was a normal hard shelled egg but no egg today .but yeah I was thinking hormonal behavior too considering she seems ok like her normal self, this morning her sister laid her at by 530am and before I took my son to school I changed their 2 waters I have in their playpen like I do everymoring so they have fresh water till I get back from taking my son to school and take them out for the day and as soon as I put the first water down she got the zoomies in her playpen lol so she seems very healthy to me with no issues other then that pre laying behavior but no egg after . And as far as broody , not really other then when she sits on her or her sister egg sometimes but usually when I pick her up and take them out she fine , there was a few times she wanted to go back in the playpen n sit on the eggs but bot to much ... and for the calcium gluconate if I do ever need to use that how much do I give ? I think I seen 1ml ? I also read that calcium gluconate is more effective if given intravenously and thats its not to effective given orally but I dont know how true that is but I know alot people do use that orally for egg binding or will give it to them for a week or so if they have soft shell eggs to build up their calcium to help harden their egg shells ..is it possible it could be broody behavior or i just think could be hormonal due to her ot laying regularly right now but her sister is so maybe thats why ? And when shes doing that shes pooping the whole time regularly

I think your right she is just hormonal at least doesn't sound like her and her sis are having squabbles my girls have been squabbling grabbing neck feathers no one is hurt but you can tell they are hormonal by the way they are acting.

You can also give Cal-Glu for soft shell. It comes in a 1ml syringe, and if you ever need to see how to administer, I can provide a link that shows where to insert the syringe into their mouths so it doesn't go down into their lungs.
That is great she laid an egg.

The calcium gluc I have is in a big clear bottle it's from tractor supply I think it's by like durvet or something I think it shows a cow on the front lol I can't remember n I'm not home right not so just give 1ml if either of my girls ever lay soft shells ..my girls never fight ,they did one time when they were molting last year but that's it's lol they are very cuddly girls ...my dominant girl which is the everyday egg layer will sometimes pull her sisters feathers when she wants her to move outta the way of the food dish in their nighttime playpen but not much .. ok thanks for your help I will was just making sure that's normal because she seems fine
