I recently saw someone with a leather shirt (picture a mountain man shirt) and really thought it looked neat. Problem is, I've never done anything but salt tanning and I've done a little research, seems to me brain tanning's the way to go. I don't have the time or know-how to do that, but I'm going to get a shirt made like that if it takes me an eternity dang it, but how do I go about finding someone to do that? I have two really nice deer hides in my deep freeze, but just don't know how to go about finding someone that knows how to tan and has the right stuff to make the shirt, so I thought I'd come here and ask. Seems someone on here would know, I guess lol.

If I was closer I'd talk you through it. I wish I still knew others who could do it, but I can give you a little info.
Try Tandy Leather or Leather Factory (same company) searches. If you want to learn how to tan a hide they have books I've seen very cheap. That frontiersman shirt you saw? Look in their pattern sections. It's there.Tanning isn't that hard, just time consuming, unless they have an easier way to do it these days. I haven't done it in about 12 years. Just too much work for me.
I have a problem these days with being able to explain or express correctly, otherwise I would be more help. I just get to frustrated.
Hope you find your help. But at least look at those patterns for the shirt. Ohhhhh! Beads-to-Buckskins. Forget 12 or 13 books in the series. Tandy always carried them. There are tons of differnt shirts in there also and if you check it out close enough you may even find the designers.
Thought I mentioned but don't see it. You can do 90% of that shirt on a regular sewing machine.

Well, I'd love to make one myself, I just don't know if I can get the time, especially this time of year. I'll check into that though just in case, and thanks very much for the info!
