I'm thinking about adding some cuckoo marans and light Sussex to my flock. What are good prices on these? Locally (south Georgia) I see people have the marans for $2 or $3 each. Are they a good bird to have? Are they friendly, gentle? They will be pets mostly. The sussex are listed upwards of $50. Are they rarer? Will they also be friendly, gentle? I have 2 ameraucaunas now and would like to add 2 each of the marans and some other type of brown egg layer. I'm looking for color variety in both feathers and eggs, along with gentleness, quietness, so any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks!

My speckled Sussex was 2.50. Not sure why they are so expensive where your at. Sussex is a very calm and friendly bird. Not sure about the other.

50 bucks for a chicken!? It better be from a royal family! Or it lays golden eggs! LOL! Chicks can be up to 5 bucks and then usually get more expensive as they get older for cost of the care and food you give it. Only pay 50 bucks for an older chicken that comes from REALLY GOOD breeding lines. Thats my advice! There are pure copper Marans on KSL, I think 4 for 80 bucks and are laying age...I personally wouldn't pay that much, another lady is starting her pure breed of BC Maran chicks at 8 bucks to 30 as they get older...

P.s. From what I have seen too Cuckoo Marans are more mass produced and usually the only marans I see on hatcheries too so they are not as expensive as other marans...It also depends on how DARK the eggs are, more expensive for the darker the eggs...

I'm having a hard time finding the light Sussex at a hatchery. Plus I only want two. This one person wants $120 for a trio, says they're rare in the u.s. On other listings they range from $10/chick to $25/chick. Maybe I'll order a minimum from a hatchery and find someone around my area to share them with.

I love them both! The Brahma is very calm also. I pick her up and she sits in my hand right away. Otherwise, she jumps up on our laps. I'm thinking of getting another brahma next weekend. They are both lovely birds! They are both beautiful when grown.

Good luck. It's so hard to choose! I would really like a golden laced or a blue laced red wyandotte, but it's very hard to find a specific color. Not many places sell chicks around here. I know of only one.:lol. I'm going next weekend when their shipment comes in. Maybe I will get lucky.
