Does anyone have any experience with this type of Cochin? I have a friend that wants to re-home a pair and I'm going to take them. I don't think I've seen anything posted on the Mottled bantam cochin here at BYC, however I did find them on a hatchery's website.

My roo Rascal thinks he's the stud of the coop. He was running around grabbing back feathers on the standard pullets Sunday so I grabbed him up and cradled him for about 30 minutes. I think it humiliated him so much when I put him down he pouted his way into the coop and stayed in there for quite some time. His sister Chloe on the other hand is a sweetie. Very pretty birds and fun to watch. He started crowing at 6 weeks and hasn't stopped.

I have black bantam cochins and I believe the only difference between the two is the color. Bantam cochins are naturally very tame and people friendly. Some more than others, but if they are not as friendly it is not hard to tame them. Them do well in confined spaces but like to roam. they have all those feathers on their feet so they sometimes need to be washed and need to be kept on grass or sand or lots of soft bedding. They are easy to catch because they cant run fast. They usually like to sit in peoples laps and be petted. They can get an attitude though and attack intruders like dogs with there feet and when they do it is surprising to see because they look quite formidable.

I was going to get into this breed but I ended up deciding I didn't have time for it. From what I found out I could only find one other well known breeder that breeds them and she was selling trios for $100.

They are a difficult breed to reach the standard because their color is so variable.

There was a really great link about them....let me see if i can find it.

I have a mottled cochin hen who is the sweetest girl ever altho she doesn't like "new chickens" I have a broody black cochin bantam who has been in the house over the winter due to an eye injury which is now cleared up but when i went to put her back in with the rest of the flock little lacy lou the mottled cochin bantam went after the black one and wasnt gonna stop....they were fighting like a couple of roosters.... the black one whos name is rory wasnt backing down either... had i not seperated them they both would have been injured. The funny thing is they used to be inseperable best buds... they loved to snuggle and hang out with each other. Cochins in general are very tame especially if you hand feed them and spend alot of time with them or at least mine are. I say go for it!

When my chicks are out in their run he hangs around with another banty rooster I have, at first I thought she was a girl till she started coloring up and crowing

Now I don't know if I'll beable to keep him or not. Time will tell.

that is so funny I notice that they are so friendly and laid back but they can get very territorial and watch out if threy do. Another thing about them is when they run they look like a basketball going along up and down a few inches,, it is really funny to watch. Especialluy when my male sees someone near his females he gets fire in his eyes and "runs" "fast" (to him I suppose its fast) I just crack up laughing. hen when they notice you are laughing at them they get so ashamed. funny little creatures,,,I hope someday I will have mottleds too.

One of the cochin roos got out of his pen today and my daughter had to go round and round the barn after him. She said she was laughing so hard she could hardly run because his "run" is more like a "hop". she said he looked like he was jumping straight up and down.
