I have 6 crested pekin eggs in the incubator, humidity at about 75%, and one of the eggs has darkened near the air cell, like a permanent shadow. I have not opened the incubator, so I don't have a picture, but can someone tell me what I am seeing or why I am seeing it? Is this normal?

Thanks

i JUST had to toss an egg like this, the other one is hatching since yesterday. it was like one day it magically appeared, looked like the shell had turned gray over almost half of it. I candled it and there was no movement, the other baby/egg was all over the place.

i cracked it and got nothing, baby had just.. died... really upsetting, was the only 2 left out of my shipped Muscovy eggs

My understanding is that this can happen when
a) the egg is hatching normally
b) the baby has drowned in the air cell
c) the baby has broken a blood vessel while pipping

Give it some time and which of the three it is will make itself clear. Sometimes the shell darkens during normal hatching, and sometimes it darkens when the baby has died, for one reason or another.

Wow, my duck eggs did the same thing but I left them beucase I put a lot of effort and money into them, well guess what I have pips in the eggs that all got weird colored

I will keep you update, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who was concerend about it~ Good luck with your hatch, I would leave them and hope for the best!!!

I had one like that too, and it hatched just fine. It think the duckling breaking a small vessel in the membrane, but they can hatch just fine. Good luck!

Thanks for the responses. I am guessing now that it has to do with normal hatching, because I have 2 hatched and 4 to go!

I hope I get at least one with a crest!
