Thank you! It’s still such a “surprise” as they grow and change. Our female was just all yellow as a duckling. Our male was all black as a baby. I just hope the one we are keeping is a girl! I can’t have 2 drakes and 1 duck.black and white ducks they shall be
Check out these “teenage” ducks. I think you were right! (Mom is white/brown and dad is black).According to what I know about duck genetics (admittedly not a ton) the pied is dominant, and black crosses with fawn to make blue.
So I think your ducklings should be blue pied?
Here's a bit of a breakdown of genetics types from the Indian Runner duck club.
Colour genotypes:
And once you know what the genetics of your adults are, you can input them into This Genetics Calculator.
- Mallard Wild colour (+).
- Trout Wild colour except for light phase (li/li).
- Blue Trout Wild colour except for light phase (li/li); heterozygous for blue dilution (Bl/bl+).
- Apricot Trout Wild colour except for light phase (li/li); homozygous for blue dilution (Bl/Bl).
- Fawn Wild colour except for light phase (li/li), dusky mallard (md / md) and sex-linked brown dilution (d/(d)).
- Black Extended black (E/E).
- Chocolate Extended black (E/E), brown dilution(d/(d)).
- Cumberland Blue Extended black (E/E), heterozygous for blue dilution (Bl/bl+).
- Fawn&white Wild colour (including dark phase Li+/Li+), except for dusky mallard (md / md), the pied Runner gene (R/R) and the brown dilution (d/(d)).
- American fawn&white Wild colour (including dark phase Li+/Li+), except for dusky mallard (md / md), the pied Runner gene (R/R), homozygous blue dilution (Bl/Bl) and the brown dilution (d/(d)).
- White Epistatic, recessive white (c/c) gene.
- Silver Wild colour except for harlequin phase (lih/lih) and dusky mallard (md / md).
The calculator is German and will call fawn and white "lavender dusky mallard runner/pied"
Good luck.
