I started learning about taking care of chickens around 7 years ago, and have read where you should never give your chickens peas or beans unless they are cooked. Well, I am researching how to make my own feed, and lots of recipes call for dried peas and/or lentils. I was really surprised by this.
So, I found a brand of feed that looks promising (if I can find it at a feed store at a fair price). One of the ingredients is peas.
Is this ok to give to the chickens? Did I read something wrong in the beginning? People must have been doing this for years and it doesn't seem to have hurt the chickens.
Do I need to change my mind or am I reading something incorrect?

here's a reliable and relatively detailed discussion about their use in poultry feed

and here are all the figures you need on all the foodstuffs you might consider using from a wholly reliable source

I have been giving mine about 10-15% mixed dried peas, fermented along with the whole grains I give them, for over a year now, and they have thrived on it. My birds have a preference for white, blue, and green peas over maple, but eat them all. I tried but stopped adding lentils because I came to consider them superfluous.

Thanks so much! I will look into the sources.
