Question about plants around the coop.

With the annual rainfall of 50 inches, poison is a must! Leave it be & it will "take over the world!"

It doesn't like any attention at all. You can't plant it in pots and transplant it. Toss it in the garden where you want it. Throw some dirt on it and just leave it. It will grow eventually.

I'm thinking of maybe planting my birdhouse gourds around the coop.

if you go with the norming glory, you have to add the moon vine (morning glory's bloom in the day, moon vine's bloom at night). If you can't get a morning glory to grow from seed, you genuinely have a skill.
What about wisteria? Beans are a good idea. I've heard hops is quite a good grower (very fast) and you get to brew beer when you are done with it!!

I hope you have your boxes really high. My friend had them on her house and the chickens flew up into them and thought it was a salad bar and dust bath.

My chickens ate my Scarlet Runner Beans, Morning Glories and nasturtiums I had planted outside of their pen in a half barrel. After three planting I gave up this year so two out of the three years I have gotten my flowers up the fence and blooming the morning glories (heavenly blue were absolutly beautiful wish I had a picture).

If you can keep them out of the planters and get the plants growing up above their reach you will be OK it is just the first three to four feet of growth they seem to love the ends and the new leaves. Just an FYI I let the girls out all of the time so it isn't lack of foraging on the lawn and in the woods they just love my flowers.

I, Too would love to add something on the outside of my run or at the corners to 'spruce" it up a little. I am planning to go with the nastutium, I know it does okay in poor soil, and it dosn't need a lot of water. I have had success with them in the past, and I am going to try them around the chickens this year. I saw a coop that had some lattice propped up against each corner on the outside and had climbing plants on it, it was very pretty.

I can tell you that blackberries will come back every year and grow like MAD. I keep mine trimmed. It is an every weekend thing here to look for canes that are running to long. Any that touch the ground will sprout roots and take hold.
They are very fast growing and thornless. The fruits form on the 2 year old canes so I do not cut them back like raspberries.
