Here on BYC I see people with different little tags on their profiles. I’m new and right now mine says “Chirping” and is there any way to change it, or do you have to be a premium member?

To have a custom title you do need to upgrade to a PFM:

That changes gradually, as you keep coming back and gaining points, but they're still set. To make custom ones you'll need a PFM I believe. The little badges that have colours you can get through nominations from other members
