Hi All, I have maybe 70 chicks, ranging in age from 2 weeks to 3 months. I gave some away, and posted them for sale on Craigslist. Just this week I have received 4 inquiries from locals. (I assume this is because the hatcheries just closed for the winter.) People seem turned off because they want chicks that are ready to lay eggs now, and they want to be sure they are buying hens only. Should I just wait until my chicks are laying to post them for sale? How much would you charge? I am in the Midwest, in a rural area about an hour from Cleveland. I posted $5 for chicks under 1 month, $10 for the chicks 2-4 months old, and $25 for laying hens when they are ready. In the ad, I invited people to leave their contact info for when the hens are laying. Do all of my assumptions sound OK? Thanks!

I can't say those numbers are unreasonable, but I can't say they are reasonable, either. Poultry markets are HIGHLY localized - and sulling mutts is always a crap shoot, because people have no way to know what to expect of them, which makes it hard to fairly value them.

Your best bet??? Don;t just post to Craigslist, research the competition. What are they selling, and for how much? Check your green sheets, postings at the local ag extension office, co-op and farm swaps, county faire, etc....
