Last night we found a lone chick roaming around the property and we took her in. She is a bit smaller and quite young. Today since she was all alone I dropped by the feed store and got a couple other pals that look like the one we found. The lady told me they were leghorns. What we have noticed is that these new kids seem to like to lay stretched out and and kind of tipped. If it was just one doing it I would be worried about one being sick but they all three do it and they have all started doing including the one we found last night. Is this something related to the leghorn breed or am I missing something? They all move around and get up and stretch every once in a while it's just a little odd to see this since we haven't seen this out of the rest of our flock. We dont have any leghorns yet either. Thanks in advance!

My Americauna and Black Australorp also like to scratch up the dirt and lay on their side now and then with the legs stretched out. They are otherwise normal and healthy. Hope yours is, too.

One of my EE's still does that. She'll dig herself a hole in the dirt outside and lay to the side and stretch her legs out. Since she is a healthy and happy chicken I assume she is just lounging.

My girls are about 8-10 weeks and last night I saw that for the first time. One was laying sort of tilted with one leg stretched ALLLLL the way out at a weird angle. I hung around for a few minutes talking to them and she stayed that way though the others were moving so I really started to worry. But as soon as I grabbed a handful of scratch she jumped up and was all over it! I think she was just lounging, like Fletch33 said. Silly girls are always doing something weird, aren't they?

It sounds like they are dust bathing, all chickens do this. It's a natural way for them to prevent or eliminate parasites as well as clean the oils from their skin. Funny to watch too, mine actually toss the dirt all over themselves. I even saw a wild turkey doing it in my yard, in a dry, sandy area.

Yeah we have been watching them and all three seem to enjoy this way of laying and they all seem good so thanks for the info!
