Okay, obviously, I am a novice. But why the difference in temps still air vs forced air?

TIA

In a fan driven box the air should be a uniform temperature from top to bottom because of the mixing caused by the moving air.

In non-fan driven box there is very little air movement which allows for temperature stratification with the air nearest the top being the warmest growing progressively cooler as you approach the bottom. This is why the directions say measure the temperature from the top of the egg. In a smallish box (as still air incubators usually are) there can be a couple of degrees difference between the top of the egg and its bottom.
