Question about water in the incubator

I'm looking to set one up and several of the sites I saw said to place a sponge in the water dish. What's the purpose of this?

Does it help with evaporation? Also should the water be closest to the light or should it be farthest from the light?

The sponge increases the waters surface area. Humidity doesn't depend on how much water is in the incubator. It depends on how much surface area that water takes up. Thus the sponge grants the water more surface area, which allows more water to be evaporated which increases your humidity.

It shouldn't matter where you put the water because your bator should be the same temp throughout. If your incubator isn't the same temp then just put it at a middle distance from the lightbulb. Not too far away, but not right on top of the light either.
