I like it, don't plant it.

Every year about this time for as long as I can remember, you see articles in every gardening publication related to what to do with your extra zucchini. I've heard that in some communities it is necessary to lock up your car at night lest you wake up the next morning to find your front seat filled with zucchini.

I have the May/June edition of Grit magazine sitting right next to me. On the cover.... "10 Ways To Use Up Zucchini" I believe the last Mother Earth News I read mentioned excess zucchini too.

This leads me to ask one question.

Why on earth do people plant so dang much zucchini????????

Wouldn't it make sense to just plant less?

It just grows so fast and one plant just keeps spitting out zucchini after zucchini. I usually only plant a couple of plants, but if you buy a whole packet of seeds what do you do with the rest?

But then how are you going to fill a random stranger's car if you don't plant to much?

Our whole family loves it so there is no such thing as to much at our house. I think my grandma has about 100 ways to cook it and my chickens go crazy for it.

My first question, always my first question, when faced with extras of any feed item in any form......do chickens like em?

I plant way to much, but give away some, eat a ton and we shred and freeze another ton. We use it in spaghetti sauce, zuchinni bread, the wife will fry it like hasbrowns.....tastes mighty good in the middle of winter. We even make zuchini pickles on years when the cucumber crop isnt so good.

You're asking the woman whose DH just brought in about 3 pounds EACH of green beans and yellow wax beans??????

I REALLY hope he never plants zucchini!

Oh yeah, he actually warned me there's a truckload of jalapenos this year, he "overplanted". Yes dear, I "overplanted" eggs this year, too.

I am on the other end of the spectrum this year... I have a blue MILLION yellow squash, and my zuchini bolted and never produced a SINGLE fruit. They were planted right next to each other in the same bed. No idea what happened with them.

Same with my baby spinach, they bolted before they ever got big enough to eat. Cucumbers and romaine lettuce however have completely taken over. Again, all in the same bed, same soil, everything.
