Question (and slight rant) about my new silkies

Quote:
Well, long story. To sum it up: got 6 opal peafowl eggs off ebay at $10/egg. 5 arrived completely scrambled. Last one didn't make it through a power outtage in the 3rd week. Seller was nice & said she'd send me a couple more at shipping cost. So I got 2 more (hopefully) coming from a seller in Tn.
Overall bad experience... not because of the seller, but just because of the circumstances.
I'm picking up two 2-week-old peachicks mid-July from a breeder about 3 hrs away from me. He doesn't have opal peafowl, but he's got a purple chick & he might have some pieds hatching this weekend.

I have decided to give up hatching as well. Just don't seem to get good hatches lately except my own eggs.
I think your chicks are very cute though.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about the hatches.
Thanks for the compliment.

They are pretty cute, aren't they?

It's a little obvious...
....Sorry that the pics are so dark, but you can definitely see that one chick has an obvious feathering issue.
Silkie:

...

The silkie chick does not appear to have silkie feathering coming in--looks like regular feathers.

That chick is "pinky." It must have been from the cochins because it has 5 toes, but 2 on each foot are pink. Its beak isn't very dark, either. I do have another white non-frizzled silkie. It appears to have normal silkie feathering coming in.
Like I said... I haven't had any luck with silkie eggs this year. My "white & black" hatch left me with 2 partridge silkies & a mille fleur bantam!

These two chicks are from the same hatch. Both are white silkies... 5 toes, dark skin.

right... I'm only going by your blue chick pic...

Sorry for the confusion... I posted the "Tutti" (blue chick) pic at the beginning of the post to show how cute the chicks were - not to illustrate the difference in feathering. That pic was taken at 2 days old... I couldn't tell a difference then.
I hope the second set of pics clarified. I actually am still hoping that Tutti might be a "real" silkie. Her/his feathers aren't coming in as quickly, so it's hard to tell for sure. Maybe a Frizzled Silkie: frizzled wings, but silkie feathering on the body.
My little black is definitely a sizzle. We're keeping it anyway.
Good luck with your silkies... and congrats on getting blues. I think they're beautiful.

LOL!
I finally get a near perfect hatch (22 out of 23 eggs hatched) but I still don't get my black silkie! All I wanted was a couple black & a couple white silkies. Now I have 2 partridge silkies, one white silkie, one white pink-skinned/beaked/footed silkie some cochins and 5 sizzles!

I think I'm going to give up and stick to my standard chickens from now on! I've got a nice little flock of BRs and a promising pair of speckled sussex. Maybe I'll ditch these sizzles & count my losses... keep a couple silkies as broodies... hmmmm.
LOL!!!
My luck with hatching eggs seems to be nil this year. They either don't hatch - or they hatch & they're not what I thought they'd be.
I have some replacement peafowl eggs coming from the ones that were scrambled in shipping and THAT'S IT.
No more hatching this year after those eggs. I've already promised DH that I won't hatch any more chicken eggs this year, just the peafowl.
So, insiderart... got any pics of your showgirls? You did get to hatch some showgirls, right?

You got ALL THE BIRDS I WANTED!!! Give em back woman! Shame on you! HOW did YOU get MY hatch???

Piker. If you were local I'd so come kick your butt and take my babies you don't appreciate them properly. Well, not kick your butt - more like bring you a mason jar of something for trade... but geez I'm working my ass off for blue sizzles and you are dissing them...

I am so whining at you now. You New Englander you, bring them to TN. You have my summer stock and here I sit with nuffin. sigh. figures.

Hugs.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!
I'm sooooooo sorry!!!
LOL!!!
I almost wanna get the chicks together & drive them down to you... almost.
Naw, the little sizzles are kinda growing on me. It's not their fault they aren't what they were supposed to be. (?)
BTW... if I were local... that mason jar better have something pretty good in it. I'm 6'1" and I can hold my own!
If you're in TN, then you are local to my summer stock!! The opal peafowl breeder is in TN. If only my eggs didn't have to be shipped!!!
*pouts*
The grass really is always greener...
