Just a few questions as i am contemplating getting a goose to live with my ducks. Are pilgrims the only auto-sexing breed from birth?? Is their laying season throughout spring (as i live in Australia my season will differ to your in months)?? and if i bourght an adult female can they be tamed to eat from your hand like chickens can??

Thanks for any help!!!! Cheers

Here (NC is considered the warmer part of the USA) Pilgrims do most of their laying during the last month of winter and the first month of spring here (Feb. & March) in the cooler part of the USA they also lay in April. Here, once the temperature gets above 32 degrees C they tend to quit laying and go broody. During the 30 days of nesting the temperature will reach 35-37 C on sunny days but April is considered to be a rainy month. I am giving temperatures because Australia is big and the weather is different between the coasts and the interior, and you gave no location in Australia. Geese don't like like high temperatures and do better in the cooler parts of the USA. And geese are more seasonal layers than even ducks. Generally I don't consider geese as agressive. they are more defensive, The gander picks out a territory and defends it, the goose usually just defends the nest and depends on the gander for wide area defence. Usually the goose sits quietly on the nest and only comes off the nest to defend it when you or other intruders get too close (4-6 feet, 1-2 meters). Finally let me recommend that you get two geese even if they are both females so they will have a buddy, ducks aren't the best companions and chickens are useless from a goose point of view.
