Question for backyard processors....what would you trade?

Believe me if someone here did it affordably I would never butcher my own.

I have a problem with tact.. I have been told many times that I am too blunt.. so don;t get p.o.'d..

all of us had a first time to kill our birds.. none of us really "like" doing the deed.. but we learned by doing..

I cannot picture me making my wife do something that I wouldn't do. I think it is time for some of those men out there to quit copping out and grow up.. I am not pointing a finger.. I don't have to.. In your own hearts you know who you are..

I held back on my comments so as not to be too blunt.. but I could add a lot more, like for instance I would be talking to my own children..

Jim, I'm with ya in spirit....but I married my DH years ago and love him for his kindness. I did not know at the time that I would journey to this point of wanting to produce my own meat so that I am eating cruelty-free as well as healthy meat. He has not taken the same journey. He also has some serious issues with loss from his past, and it is unkind of me to push him.

And at this point, it would be extremely unfair of me to insist that he man-up and kill for me. It was my grandma's job to kill the chickens, so I suppose I can do it, too.

But if he one day changes his mind, I will gladly step aside and stay in the kitchen in my bare feet!

(Those who know me are guffawing at the thought of me being a stereo-typical submissive wifey!)

I appreciate all opinions, even the blunt ones. Thanks, Jim!

My roomate/best friend since childhood also could never kill anything he has met..

I myself, finally culled "Red"/"Mr. Stringy" 2 days ago..He was 10 months old and made a wonderful Coq au vin

I learned a lot doing it myself..I wish I'd had someone to show me and walk me thru it..But ahh well..

I will do better next time!

I was apologizing to him (the rooster) because I hadn't cut his throat properly the first time..

Like I said, I learned a lot..And feel better now that I have that knowledge.

It took me like 3 hours from start to finish..I was very careful not to get any icky bits in with the meat..
I did good

No money is exchanged whenever we do this. I let the guy who does it decide on what's fair to him, but I won't go over 50/50. Usually his decision is based on how much freezer space or canning jars he has and what his family neeeds.

Our deal covers rabbits and flock birds.

He does the awful part -- the killing, then I assist him on all the rest. I have to check everything for diseases before the meat is cleared safe for his family and mine. He brings buckets to take his meat home, and I go ahead and do my processing or cooking. Sometimes he will do the rabbits for a small portion of the meat and all the pelts.

My Great Grandmother used to get all the kids out of bed at 4 am to prep the chickens she picked out for the table. She'd do the awful part, and we'd do the rest. Guess that method just sorta stuck with me.

The City recently passed a law against backyard slaughtering, which in my opinion is idiotic. I can see a law that would guarantee safey and health as well as fencing that would block view to such goings on. But to ban it altogether is ignorant.

Whatever you do, it's going to be a very busy day for you, and likely the next couple of days will be very busy as well.

Oh my goodness. That's awful.

My oldest son was asked to help a neighbor kill and prepare a flock of chickens. That particular son is one of the "hog hunters" and we thought it'll be a breeze for him.

After it was over he was literally sick and said he'd never ever do that again.
