I just used a coffee can of hen scratch. Every afternoon I would let out breed pens that were far enough apart that they wouldn't meet up and and breed with each other. As I tossed grain out to the rest of the birds I would chunk a can into the pen that was let out. Birds come running for the hen scratch and I close the gate. Worked pretty well... They would always go back to bed though.
What would make me mad was when I would forget to close the gate and I wake up the next morning and see the Mallard hens coming out from under the dog house where they layed their eggs if I forgot to close them up and a flock of chickens spread out all over the yard with a look of pure delight on their little faces because their dumb Pet forgot to close the gate when they went to bed. Now in the morning I could get most of them in, but usually not everyone. So I just counted on the dogs and the rooster to protect everyone while I was at school.
