How many chickens are Raleigh residents allowed to keep by law? I'm looking for credible responses. If you're not certain, please state so in your response.

Thanks

Sean

Thank you!!!! I so often hear that only 4 hens and no roosters are allowed but no one is able to cite any specific ordinance. Any idea where people are coming up with this?

That sounds like Cary or Durham, maybe. As for roosters, they are not explicitly illegal in Raleigh, but the noise ordinance would likely be an issue.

You'd be surprised at the number of people that say Raleigh residents are limited to 4 hens. I've actually seen it on websites. As it concerns specific statutes, the only things I've read are consistent with what you've told me. Thank you so much for clearing this up for me.

That's odd that people would say that. Many of the Raleigh coops on this year's Tour D'Coop had more than 4 hens, including some with 12!

Indeed, there were. 717 Currituck had 15 in the yard and 10 in the brooder. The owner and I went down to Broadway, NC yesterday. He picked up 5 more for a total of 30! I picked up two white 12 week old Silkies (hopefully pullets). After the two Silver-Laced Wyandottes I bought on Sunday at the Wicked Chicken Auction, I now have 9 total. I'm right down the street from the Currituck house on Macon, so between the two of us, that's over 200 eggs per week!

Hi I live in Raleigh and in April I bought newly hatched chicks. 5 are roosters. I need some help as to how I can rehome them locally. 3 are black silkies and 1 is a Mille Fluer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in Raleigh too. You were hoping to have Silkie hens, right? Same thing happened to me, but I decided to keep my Silkie roo. Right now (literally) I'm in my back yard putting together a new coop, as I decided to start breeding Silkies and will be keeping them separate from the rest of my flock. I can't take on any more roosters, and by rehoming, I'm assuming you're looking to either sell them or give them away, right? There are a lot of people like you that ended up with Silkie roosters, so it might be difficult to sell them, although I see them on Craigslist quite often. You can take them to the Wicked Chicken Auction in Clayton on Sundays, but you'd be lucky to get $5 a piece for them. If they are really nice specimens, you'd be better off. Feel free to give me a call if you want to chat more in detail. My name is Sean and my number is (919)623-0238.

Good luck.

Sean

Thanks Sean. I have no interest in selling them. I just need to get rid of them. ;) Thankfully 1 one the 4 silkies I got is a female...got lucky and she is the blue one. :) It's just gotten to the point that they are now fighting all the time... This is not good for either the males or females. Thanks for the info.
