Question mark diamonds

What are the black diamond question mark thingies that are littered across so many people's BYC pages? It makes it hard for me to read the pages. Are people putting them there purposely? Is there a sinister plot involved?

You'll find it in posts that are copy-pasted, or from 'non-standard' keyboards. Apostrophes, slashes, and question marks are the most common offenders. Double-spaces are also a common culprit.

The browser can't parse the character used, and substitutes that symbol.
