Question of the Day - Friday, May 23rd, 2025

It wasn't until I was in my 30s that someone asked me if I preferred to be called Sally or Sal. I hate being called Sal. My name is Sally.

The person said, "Why do you let people call you Sal if you don't like it? It's YOUR name!"
Our aunt, on my husband's side, moved back to Cincinnati and when I met her for the first time, she said "everyone calls me Becky". I asked what she preferred, to which she replied, Rebekah, my name. So I said Rebekah. Later, around some of her sisters (she had 10), I spoke of how much I enjoyed Rebekah...they said Who? 😅

Your name is probably the first identity you are conscious of, even before you realize you exist. I feel strongly that it should be spelled and pronounced correctly. Whenever I get new students, I always ask if I'm pronouncing correctly, and honor requests for full names or nicknames.
Good Teacher. Shows you care and they are important from the start.

I'm a Rebecca and much prefer Becky. My husband's former boss used to always introduce me to her snotty rich friends as Rebecca. To which I responded, call me Becky. She would get so mad. Becky sounded too common for her

I had a 5th grade boy come through my lunch line the other day. I rang him out and said, "Ok Grantlyn. You can go." He responded, "My name is Kitten now. Call me Kitten." I told him "Absolutely not. I can call you Grant but not Kitten. I don't play those games."
We also have two kids that go by totally different names, have for years. I call them by their desired name, no problem. But I don't play these childish games

No on my first name. On my last name, yes, but that's because there's two capitalized letters in it and often people don't do that. They also mispronounce my last name too.
