People know I don't want or need anything. Not even a favor.

Thank them politely and then donate it somewhere or another or give it to a friend

Thank them and decide later what to do with it. Usually my options are giving it to someone I know or to Goodwill.

A friend had a tradition with her brother. Each would give the other the most hideous gift they could find, and they traded years being the giver or receiver. Ugly lamp, horrid candy bowl. The catch was: You had to have the gift where people could see it for the year. And you could not give that gift back the next year.

After a few years, they compared notes, decided a "winner" and stopped doing it.

Thank the person and regift it or donate it. Or it sits in my basement gathering dust. Depends on the gift
