I prefer no holder (just place the roll on a table or something), but front if it's on a holder.

If you want to train your animals to leave the roll alone, install it to feed from the front and put an empty soda can on top with a hanxful of dried beans inside with the top taped shut. Your dog will learn after only one or two experiences, the cat may need as many as 20. Cats are inveterate gamblers.
