Are auto-sexing chicks ever wrong? I have a cream legbar that was obviously a female as a baby but as she gets older her comb and waddles are developing quite fast. She also loves to chest bump and spar with the other chicks quite often.

A photo showing the head, specifically the comb and wattles size and color could be most helpful. A second photo showing the legs, posture, and profile could also help. Usually five weeks of age is when these things start becoming clearer though some are more challenging than others. How old is the chick?

There are two answers to your question. If both parents are set up properly genetically then the results should be accurate. But the problem comes in when one of the parents is not set up perfectly. It is possible one could have a gene that is not supposed to be there.

I don't know where you got that chick. Is it possible it does not have the parents you think? Or it could be a pullet that is developing early? Pullets can develop combs and wattles.

I will get a posture picture when I get a chance I’m not home currently.
