I have a RIR Broody hen laying on 9 eggs... should I leave her in the koop? and .... I was thinking of putting chicken wire around the shelf she is on to
keep the other chicks from laying there eggs near her. I will put water and food with her. I will take a pic later of where she is...
I was going to let the chick grow up in there with her as the shelf is almost 8 feet long and 2 feet wide.
Will the hen need to get out at any time? She does not look like she has moved in 5 days... I am keeping my eye on her.
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated! She is 1 year old... and I am so proud of her!
Thank you,

Amazing to have a RIR broody. Not a common thing. The proper way for your hen to set is at floor level and secluded from the others. She wil need food and water, and enough space for eliminations. You don`t have to help her as she will do it when needed. It is not uncommon for broodies to stay on the nest for 2-3 days befor taking food or eliminating. If you have to move her, do it gently and at night. The new chicks will need access to the nest. If they can`t enter and exit easily, they may be left in the cold by the hen. Good luck........Pop

thanks for your info Pop! I am so excited for this process...
My husband and I will put her on floor level tonight and close it up with chicken wire...
I will have another location for her in about 2 weeks... another koop with 1 Roo I am giving away this week (he is too aggresive) and he unfortunately will be someones dinner.

I will give his 3 hens a week to get over it, and then move them to the other red koop. Then I can give miss broody the empty koop to raise her chicks!

I've had to move my broody (sitting on 8 eggs) off the nest once each day to stretch her legs, poo and eat some. After 10 mins. or so, I put her back in her broody cage and she's happy till tomorrow.

I've heard tell of broody girls dying on the nest because they are too dedicated and won't leave the nest, so that's why get her out once a day.

Thanks CalicoKat...
I took her of 11 Eggs! and had her stretch her legs... she was upset at first but then seemed to like it.
Next weekend I will start getting her own place ready... and she can have some peace...
Thanks for everyones help!
