Question on duck colors

In reading about duck colors, I keep running into the terms 'penciled' and 'laced'. I have searched but cannot find any definition of the terms. Can someone please translate the words and/or show some photos of them? One of my new Anconas has spots that are a mixture of brown and black. Does this make it a cross-breed? Or is it a tri-color? Thanks.

Your best bet is to look up on google with the images to get an idea of what they mean. For my fawn and white runners its where they are sorta wearing a "vest" of brown and a bit of brown around the eye while the base coat is white. Penciled from what I understand is the same Idea but the spot around the eye is black instead of brown

Im not 100% with the laced but it probably is what it sounds like. A solid base coat with a pattern on them. Like a bluetick coon hound how it has the speckled affect.

Lacing is a narrow darker or different color border around the edge of the feather.

One reference I found stated that penciled was each feather edged with a different color. I could not find a definition for laced. Maybe the two terms are being used interchangeably.

Reading Holderread's book he says:

Penciled. The definition is long, but it refers to lines through or around the feathers. If the line is only on the very outer edge, then it is lacing. If the lines go through the feathers, it is penciling.

There is also a penciled runner duck, which is a color pattern.

This is the clearest photo I have of lacing. The blue gives a good contrast with the white, so it is easy to see.

The band around the outer edge of these feathers is lacing. The interior of these feathers, where the color is mottled is called mossy. Usually, the interior of the feather would be a solid color and the lacing would be of a contrasting color, or a darker or light er shade of the interior of the feather. I don't have any photos of penciling since I don't have any birds with penciling on their feathers.
