I have been really thinking about getting into raising some quail.
For fun, and food. I just need some more things to do to keep me
busy this summer. I was planning on building the pens up off
the ground with wire floors. For starters I am going to keep it
fairly small. How much room does a breeding treo of quail need.
1 male, 2 or 3 females. I plan on covering the cages with a roof,
but having part of it in the open to get sunlight.

width
height

thanks

The "to the book" rule of thumb is 1 square foot per bird however i dont even go off of that. If you're wanting coturnix quail you'd be better off with 4 hens rather than 2-3 so the male isnt torchering just 1-2 hens over and over daily. If you're meaning bobwhites then you'd be better off with just a pair.

A normal sized rabbit hutch would house 5 coturnix quail beautifully. 3 ft long by 2 ft wide to just spout off a nice size that's not too big...though big is always better.

Thanks for the advice. I have been looking for info on raising quail, and
it seems like it's not as easy as chickens. Am I reading too much into it,
or does it really take that much more work to get it right with quail?
