I know that some chicken raisers keep lights on in their coops to promote fast growth. And I have noticed that when I go out at night to double check the chickens before going to bed that they will come out of their roosting and start eating while I am there with a flashlight. I have a few questions about this practice.

1) What is the affect on the chickens health to do this? Has it been independently studied and not funded by large chicken producers that are necessarily concerned about the bottom dollar.

2) Is it really cost effective for a small scale chickherd (

, don't know the proper term for us who keep chickens)?

I dont know the answer to that and curious on what you get, but I keep a red heat lamp on in mine at night with mine and they seem to do ok....
