Question on nesting "buckets"

I picked up some buckets from the deli. Unfortunately, they are not 5 gallons. They end up being 11.5 inches deep as well as across.

Is that going to be too small to use for standard sized chickens?

That's pretty tight. My birds are standard size and the nest boxes are 15" x 15" x 15", which they love.

I think you would be fine. Chickens like a dark little cave to lay in. Those metal nest boxes can't be much bigger than that, if not even smaller.
