I have 2 brown/red roo's to choose from to keep for my breeding trio, 1 looks like a typical brown/red but the other that I have has alot of gold lacing on his chest he is a lil younger. Both are under 5 months. I personally like the one better with the lacing, but would like to keep the one that is closer to type... For those that are better with type on the OEGB which one should I keep??

From what I understand there is more than one brown/red coloration. I have a few games that are brown/red and I have two different looking roos. Also keep in mind that color changes through molts.

You may have a black breasted brown/red and a brown breasted brown/red. Also I breed a BRH over BB Red and I get about 30% of the chicks molting to brown/red, another 20% to BRH and the remainder a dark BB Red. In fact I can't tell the mixed pullets apart from the pure, which is why I keep them separated. Many of the colors in games are mixes, some of the colors do not breed true and have to be mixed to achieve that color. I would keep them both, I believe you should always have one backup rooster.

I like the one with the lacing but you would probably want to keep the other. Check feathersite for their pics. Though I understand what WW is saying and that may be a great excuse to keep both

Maybe PM B.safflesFarms ?

It depends on your broodpens. If your hens are too black the one with the excessive breast lacing is best. If the hens have proper amounts of gold in the neck and retain a good black ground color then go with the black breasted one. Ideally they should look like the black breasted one with just a hint of gold edging in the top-most breast feathers, and likewise with the hens. He also has darker eyes and legs, so I would go with him.

If you are trying to raise Brown Red Old English to show, I would not breed from either one of them. While type is paramount(and yet to be determined here), the color faults on both of these birds is a major fault, even at 4-5 months old.
One cockerel has no lacing and lacing is hard to get so it is better to use a male that is modestly over laced. But the lacing must be crisp and form the outside edge of the feather.
The other cockerel is not really laced, it is a mealy type lacing, but more importantly it is eat up with shafting, which is a major default in Crow Wings and should be culled.

As far as looking at Feathersite for examples of breeds, that is great for general ideas, but the quality of birds can sometimes be poor. For pictures of what you should be striving for you need to go to the Breed websites, in this case the OEGBCOA. They have a picture file that should help.

Not in it for showing purposes..Honestly if it wasn't for my DH I wouldn't be keeping them. Both birds were from his pair that I sold because the money was right, so I was goin to try and keep a trio of these to replace them. Thanks for the info
