I set 43 eggs. I'm on day 11 today. I candled them on day 9. One marans egg was awful smelling- I candled it, you could see a distinct dark blob in there, but it just smelled so bad. I watched it for absolute ages hoping to see movement. I eventually cracked it out of curiosity and what appeared to be pre-scrambled egg spilled out, with a bit of blood. I'm assuming the yolk burst or something?

Anyways, that's not my actual question :P

I've read some threads that say 'don't give up' on an egg even if it appears 'clear'.

I have a turkey egg in there. I have no turkey toms. My rooster has been breeding my turkey hens and several of their eggs are apparently 'fertile' (upon cracking them for eating). So I figured- what they heck! Let's see what happens...

On day 4 there was a dark shadow in the egg. On day 9, the shadow is still there with no apparent change. I can't see any veins or distinct dark spots. The egg does not stink. It looks close to this, but the dark spot is very very dark, not translucent. This this is just a photo from the learning center, not of my turkey egg!

So do I wait until it smells to determine it's bad? I imagine the hybrid might have different development... Thoughts?

Chickens and turkeys are different species. They can't inter-breed. You might get an embryo that makes it a while, but it's 99% likely it will not survive til hatching, if it's viable right now at all. They're just not the same species, their genes aren't compatible.

Researching it is what prompted me to try. Allegedly 'churks' are entirely possible to hatch, but are always sterile males. I'm not going to throw the egg out if it isn't bad- it's just not progressing visually, but it's also not rotten.

Turkey x peacock, chicken, pheasant, etc are all sterile but possible hybrids, apparently!
