I've always been interested in having a peacock since I was a kid. However, I dont know what the purpose of a peacock is. Do they lay eggs that are eaten, are they used for meat or just an ornamental bird?

Mostly just ornamental but I have heard of them being eaten. Though I don't know why you would eat one when you can sell them for $50 to $100 or more, little expensive for my taste buds.

Mostly ornamental, I have eaten the eggs, Have a friend that will eat the ones he culls.(hens that dont lay,and etc) But eggs sell for 5 .00 and up each and birds sell for alot to eat.

Peacocks used to be served in India cooked and dressed in thier feathers. It was a dinner for the rich. It's not done as much anymore. They are definitely ornamental BUT they are excellent watchdogs for hawks and fozes. They honk loudly when a fox or hawk makes an appearance at my place. They also devour any grasshopper or cricket they see.
