Question on showing the rare colored turkeys

Has anyone showed the rare colors?

We are considering the Golden Nargansett and the Jersey Buff. Maybe the Chocolate. How have these done in the shows? Can they win over a variety that is in the Standard? Can a poor quality Bourbon Red win over an excellent quality Jersey Buff?

The colors aren't listed in the APA standard for various reasons, #1 being the don't breed true. Plus there is a long drawn out process to get a new variety accepted. A standard has to be written and a certain number of birds entered in shows.

Wrong! The Jersey Buffs and Chocolate if pure do breed true. Slates do not breed true and they are APA appoved. There is not enough people breeding and showing many new colors for them to be listed in the APA standard. The Jersey Buff was once a APA bird. To be APA appoved breed requires at least five breeders to have produced them for at least five years and they must be judged in all available turkey classes for two years in two shows by APA approved judges. They then must have a qualifying meet at a prominent show where at least 50 birds are shown by at least five breeders. How many shows do you see with 50 turkeys?????​

Read the APA standard sometime, they have to breed true at least 50% of the time -that is why the Slates are in the standard.

So what was your point? Why did you say the #1 reason is because they have to breed true? Jersey Buffs and Chocolate do breed true 100% of the time. Many, Many, Many rare breed colors bred true.

The real reason is not enough people show turkeys.
