New Gal here

I'm from Texas, I have no idea what chicken showing is nor how to do it. In May I will be getting some 'show quality' Black Australorps, and a few Golden Sex Links. If they are 'show quality' -And I will post pictures when they get here, and as they mature- Now, on that same note, I already have an Americauna hen who will hopefully be very excited to have some fellow laying friends, and several Claret chickens I recieved from my uncle years back.

I have 47 Clarets, four of them are roosters.
One Americauna Hen aka Piggy who I will post pictures of tomorrow when the sun is up. A Golden Sex Link / Americauna chick, Ducky, who is daughter of Piggy and Earl. Earl was a GSL rooster, who unfortunately had to become food because he was mixing with my game birds and attacking/fighting them all the time.
aannnddd a few crosses from where the hens sat on Piggy's

Back on the showing issue. If I start showing chickens, I have to start small of course, where do I go to find information on Black Auster shows? Or chicken shows of any kind? I was also thinking of investing in a few Crested Black Polish Chickens, but I only know of getting them from hatcheries because they are a rare bird. Does anyone have any suggestions or any Texans out there would be willing to help me find shows?

Thanks from

PoultryPress.com ...poultry newspaper put out monthly covers all the shows in the U.S., and many exhibition breeders selling show quality birds, I would also invest in getting an American Poultry Association Standard Book,(black and white is like 15 bucks. The newspaper is well worth the the 26 bucks a year. These folks are out of Indiana but travel the states and attend a TON of shows. Dont know of any only Austrolorp shows. However I have seen them in all the shows i have been to. Good Luck!

Here is a list of a few shows in Texas, there won't be any till Fall.
Keep an eye out before the show in the Show section of this site and you will see infomation on these shows.
You can also go to the ABA website to see a list of shows. A lot of the smaller shows in Texas do not advertize in the Poultry Press because of the cost
and the fact that Texas is a closed state ( no outside exhibitors)

Wow thanks. I had no idea there were so many places to go to search for shows or help on chickens. Sure would have been helpful when I began raising and breeding, had to learn everything the hard way.

I completely agree that you should pick up a standard of perfection.

Golden-sex links are not a breed and cannot be shown according to APA standards. I'd get the SOP (Standard of Perfection) to help yourself in that breeders often sell their birds under the guise of "champions" when they have only won at a 4H show with no APA judging. Get the standard to help you guard against poor birds.

Shows are a lot of fun. There's so much to learn, so many people to talk to...it's a blast!

I'll be getting my clutch from an aunt who used to show. She's been breeding and upgrading her birds for longer than I've been alive, she didn't promise much more than better than average because she hasn't shown in so long and doesn't know what standards are like now. I'm super duper excited either way, I'll have to look in on all of this I had no idea showing chickens was such a brutal affair, hah!
