So recently I read someone saying that ducks start laying eggs, at 4-7 months old, with the larger ducks like Pekins, Rouen, and Cayuga taking longer to start laying while others that are smaller will start quicker in that range.

This was surprising to me because up till now I'd never seen anyone state 7 months to start laying, but all other sources were saying 4 to 5 months. I can't remember if the person that commented that was on this site or a different one. And I'd also started to get more interested in ducks than chickens because people said chickens won't lay until 6 months, but ducks can lay as early as 4 months. (I still like ducks if that's not true.)

I was a bit worried about that because I have pekins.

Can someone clarify what's up with that? Does that mean I'm not going to have egg until 7 months old? (Darn ...I thought I'd be in that 4 to 5 month window. And my pekins are pretty big now.)

Thanks.

well it depends, If they hatch in the summer, they might mature by fall, then not start because of winter and wait until spring

If they hatched today there is a chance they might not lay untill next spring

But i had a batch of pekin/Appleyards hatch and all start laying within 4 months. Ive also had ducks lay almost all winter

Dont get descouraged!
