question re (partial?) spraddle leg

Quote:
I agree with swtangel. The one I had like that was scooting around on her butt, until I splinted her legs, then when I took the splint off, her legs were about the same as the one you have. Now she is about 6 weeks old, and i can't tell her from the other chicks, she straightened right up!!

The little one doesn't look too bad off to me. I think I would make sure it had something to walk on that is easy to grip, and not let it walk on anything smooth for quite a while in order to avoid injury and give the bird time to correct itself.

I'm so glad I found this thread. I have only been able to find one little polish pullet around this area, and she started showing signs of this last week. She's just about 2 weeks old now, so I'll try the bandaid thing. I am definately more hopeful now.

Good luck with your baby too!

Are certain breeds more prone to this? I've got 49 chicks in all, 19 are about 5 months old, healthy and most are laying eggs already, and only this one has ever exhibited any signs of it at all. They've all been raised in the same rubbermaid tubs with pine shavings.

Mine was from the first hatch I ever did, and I thought it was having trouble, so I helped it out. I think it was caused from the chick being weak, because it bled quite a bit when I helped it. It also didn't have all the yolk absorbed. But it survived. I think there are some that have had certain birds that pass this problem on to their offspring, but I don't know if it is something with certain breeds.

I know I am new to this and all and I dont know much about chickens aside what I have learned here (which by the way is alot). I have to say, from all of the bird pictures I have viewed here and elsewhere, that is the prettiest looking rooster I have ever laid my inexperienced eyes upon. What breed is that?

I guess I never saw the thread about the bandaid. Is it like a sling or something? would be cool to see a picture of how yall are doing that.

mjd, thanks for the compliment! That is a mille fleur cochin. It is not a recognized color variation yet but several people are working on it and a lot more people are waiting to get their hands on some... There just are not enough of them out yet, and what there is, a lot of them still have D'uccle traits. This guy has a tall neck, a couple of higher riding tail feathers, D'uccle feathering on his feet and vulture hocks. Aside from that, he's great! LOL Not trying to knock my own bird, just letting people know what faults to be on the lookout for and try to breed out if they ever get started with the mille fleur cochins.
